Government of Alberta budget announcement

There were no surprises in today’s provincial budget. In that sense, we appreciate the Alberta Government’s willingness to work with us in a transparent and open manner.

The two per cent increase in our Campus Alberta operating grant translates into a positive increase estimated at nearly $2 million. Unlike in past years, there were no funds to offset the tuition freeze. Although anticipated in our budget preparations, this decision carries a negative impact of about $1.1 million.

In the next two weeks, we will incorporate the specific provincial budget inputs and complete the latest round of adjustments to our 2017/18 budget. The Budget Advisory Committee will continue to meet to arrive at a balanced budget. An update will be provided on April 3 from 2:30 to 4 p.m in the Ross Glen Hall. Work will continue on the draft budget until it goes to the Board of Governors for approval in May.

In the longer term, we will continue to participate in provincial reviews of tuition and mandatory non-instructional fees. Sustainable and predictable funding remains vital to the health of our sector.
