Thursday, June 23 beginning at 11:30 a.m., Big Bob's BBQ! — Located at the Gauthier Courtyard beside Big Bob's (Charlton) Pond (Main Street if it's raining). Tickets are $10 each and are available from James Parsons, The Bookstore and TVP. Tickets that have already been purchased will be honoured, and revenues go to TVP student bursaries. Bob Charlton - the founder and champion of this event - was a great philanthropist at MRU, and this tradition is carried on in his name.

It's free, it’s fun, there are NON-athletic options and the time commitment is small. CCC is open to ALL employees including staff, faculty, casual, contract, etc.

July through August, MRU Kids on campus — MRU Kids are a vibrant youthful addition to our MRU campus this summer. Offering a variety of programming in athletics, science and music, it’s the place where kids aged 5-17 create some unforgettable memories with MRU staff and new friends. Since 1990, MRU kids has grown up from a mere 300 campers to over 2,700 campers! So, if you’re on campus this summer, give a wave to the MRU Cougars of tomorrow.

Professor Kit Dobson named Eakin Visiting Fellow in Canadian Studies at McGill University
The prestigious Eakin fellowship is specifically designed for faculty on sabbaticals from their home institutions and is meant to foster cross-university connections in all fields connected to Canadian Studies. Dobson, PhD, was chosen as fellow through a competitive application process, with his based on his research program in English and Cultural Studies. The duties of the Eakin Fellow are to give the Eakin Memorial Lecture in Canadian Studies (view the video) and to deliver a seminar in Canadian Studies. Entitled Shopping in Canada, Dobson will deliver a version of his seminar (geared toward English students) at MRU in the winter of 2017.
Additionally, the work Dobson is completing while on sabbatical is planned for a book to be published in the fall of 2017 about shopping and mall culture in Canada.
Professor Lynn Moorman receives Emerald Award
Professor Lynn Moorman, PhD, accepted an Emerald Award on the evening of June 8 from the Alberta Emerald Foundation at their 25th annual awards ceremony at Telus SPARK. Uniquely Albertan, the Emerald Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding environmental achievements of large and small businesses, individuals, not-for-profit associations, community groups, youth and governments. Moorman received the honour in recognition for Public Education and Outreach, and as an acknowledgement of her Canadian Geographic Education program, the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge, which engaged 35,000 students in Canada this year alone. Moorman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and serves as both the Governor, Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Post-secondary Representative, Canadian Geographic Education.
Journalism students net national award
Amara McLaughin and Jessy Yardley won the CAJ/CNW Student Award of Excellence at the Canadian Association of Journalists gala Saturday, May 28 in Edmonton. The prize was bestowed for their Calgary Journal story entitled "Risky decisions for cancer care patients in Canada." This is the third year in a row MRU has won this award, beating out bigger programs such as Carleton, Ryerson and Western.

U wing water shutdown (June 24) and electrical shutdown (June 25/26)
Due to maintenance work the U wing will experience a water shutdown on June 24 and an electrical shutdown on June 25 and 26.
On Friday, June 24, there will be no hot or cold water available in the morning. It is expected that cold water will be available after noon and work will be complete by mid-afternoon. Recreation will be shutting down all operations until noon, however the Wellness Centre will function as usual. All U wing washrooms will be closed until the water is back on, with people redirected to W or I wing washrooms.
On Saturday, June 25, electrical power in the U wing will be unavailable from 9 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. onSunday, June 26.
The next scheduled repair will be an ENMAX 12-hour electrical shutdown in the main campus building, starting at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6.
Also, a reminder that work to install a new sport impact floor in the Fitness Centre, Multi-purpose Room and Bookable Weight Room will begin on June 20. More information is availablehere.
