Start Campus Sustainability Month by using new 4-way disposal bins

New bins help displace onsite waste going to landfills. Here is how you use the four separate compartments: (1) mixed recycle (for the same kind of items as your home blue bins, (2) refundables (for bottles and cans, Mount Royal receives revenue), (3) paper and cardboard (if near a student study area) or organic (if near a food service area) and (4) landfill waste. If a paper/cardboard bin isn't nearby, put in the mixed recycle bin. The goal is to displace 75% of onsite waste going to the landfill. More details are here or you can share this presentation with your colleagues. Learn more about campus sustainability here.

Office too hot or too cold?

As we move from summer air conditioning to fall heating, you may feel some discomfort in your office temperature. Facilities Management appreciates your patience in addressing concerns. A comfortable temperature (ranging from 22° to 24.5ºC) impacts your well-being and productivity and is achieved through air temperature, humidity and movement. Here are some quick tips: (1) Electronics create heat, so turn off your computer at day's end; (2) Ensure thermostats and air vents aren't blocked; and (3) Layer clothing to adjust to temperatures through the day. If these tips don't address your concerns, please go here to create a service request.

It's also Cyber Security Awareness Month - win a laptop or a GoPro!

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month (CSAM). CSAM is a joint effort by government and business leaders across Canada, the U.S., the U.K, Australia and New Zealand to increase knowledge and practice of on-line safety to combat cyber crime. In recognition of CSAM, Information and Technology Services is offering staff and faculty the opportunity to win a Dell Chromebook or a GoPro Hero, while learning how to protect themselves from cyber crime. Check the IT security website at mru.ca/itsecurity for details.

Bleed blue! Awards and milestones

Co-written by Mount Royal faculty members Evelyn Field (Department of Psychology) and David Aveline (Department of Sociology and Anthropology), Sexuality Now: Embracing Diversity, First Canadian Edition has a fresh, engaging and distinctly Canadian approach. It teaches students what they need and want to know about sexuality, while clearly conveying foundational biological and health issues and citing current and classic research. The text is solidly founded in author Janell Carroll's partnership with her students, answering the questions and concerns that students have about themselves and their sexuality with scientific fact, sensitivity, humour and unmatched candor. The Canadian edition presents the range of sexual orientations and behaviours and takes into account the diverse social, religious, ethnic, racial and cultural contexts of today's students.
