Bleed Blue — awards and milestones
MRU Floats to top of Canada's most waterwise school case competition Mount Royal University collected top prizes in the Most Water Wise School Case Competition 2016, developed by the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating. Four Department of Earth and Environmental Science students took home first place by developing green-roof implementation plans by proposing to install a demonstration multifunctional water collection site. The second-place team, also from the Department of Earth and Environmental Science, focused on water consumption by toilets, showers and faucets at Mount Royal’s recreation area. The scope of this study was limited to change rooms and facility washrooms that manage almost 60,000 people annually. Based on the team’s statistical projection, the recreation centre would conserve 938,000 litres of water per year by implementing all upgrades. Each year, the winning teams are announced on March 11 – World Plumbing Day. Brian Sevick, chairman of Earth Sciences, was the faculty advisor for both winning projects.
