New non-profit launched for the sake of putting children first

Child Studies and Social Work faculty member Sara Austin recently launched a new non-profit Children First Canada, which has the mandate of making Canada the best place in the world for kids to grow up. According to an article by Austin titled "Taking The Leap", which was recently published in Women of Influence, although Canada ranks as the fifth most prosperous nation in the world, "when it comes to the wellbeing of children, we drop to 17th place. On key measures for child health and safety, we rank 27th...We can and must do better."

Children First Canada is partnering with children's charities, corporations and community leaders to bring more public attention to these issues and will work to implement positive change for children.

derek beaulieu gives it all away

derek beaulieu (who doesn't capitalize his name) of the Department of English, Languages, and Cultures recently began posting free downloadable PDFs of his many publications, including most of his full-length books. He says, "I believe that today's reader seeks their writing in different forms and that reading has taken on different shapes. By releasing books as PDFs into the collective commons, writing can better engage with new, liquid forms of reading."

Likening the experiment to a student embarking on a post-secondary journey, beaulieu expects his work will undergo growth and evolution through the process. "They leave the nest, they live in residence, they get a piercing, they dye their hair, they learn and grow and change
and they become different people. They return with new ways of seeing the world. I'm excited to see what my writing learns when it travels and returns home," he says.
