Faculty of Business and Communication Studies

The Bissett School of Business and the Faculty of Communication Studies merged under the leadership of our Founding Dean, Elizabeth Evans. The Bissett School of Business and the School of Communication Studies exist within the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies. The baccalaureate degrees offered are the same: a Bachelor of Business Administration: Accounting, General Management, Human Resources and Marketing; and, a Bachelor of Communications: Broadcast Media Studies, Information Design, Journalism and Public Relations. The Schools will be the primary external identity for their programs, while administrative and governance structures will be in the Faculty.

Demonstrations on campus

Campus spaces are legally considered to be public spaces. Demonstrators on campus (including students, employees and the general public) are exercising their constitutionally-protected right to freedom of expression by participating in peaceful gatherings. If groups, such as Pro Life demonstrators, are displaying graphic pictures on posters or in brochures, we will put up signage to make people walking toward them aware of their presence. We will also let the campus know where they are in an Announcement on MyMRU. Employees who are upset by materials can access services through Homewood Human Solutions (Employee Family Assistance Program). Students upset by the materials can access services at the Wellness Centre.

2016 United Way campaign

The 2016 campaign goal is to raise $50,000 (10% more than last year), with donations going to organizations that support youth. On Sunday, Sept. 18, a MRU team will go to the Calgary International Airport to participate in the Plane Pull (hauling a 737 50 feet). Last year, MRU finished fifith out of 20 teams. To help us raise $1,200 before the 18th, please go here (a tax deductible receipt will be provided). A number of other activities are planned during the academic term and will be shared in coming Our Community e-newsletters.

Conservatory issues

You've likely heard concerns about employment matters regarding two individuals at the Conservatory. As always, personnel matters are confidential. These decisions were carefully considered and will not be reversed. The Conservatory is working one-on-one with students directly impacted by these decisions, providing them with options. The University is committed to ongoing exceptional programming and financial sustainability at the Conservatory. More than 200 instructors provide, and will continue to provide, world-class programs. And this year, there were a record number of students, surpassing 10,000 registrations for the first time ever.
